As a key member of the Development Services team, the Building Inspector reports to the Director of Development Services. This position performs both technical plan review and field inspections to ensure compliance with building codes, zoning regulations, and municipal ordinances. The role ensures that residential, commercial, and industrial projects meet all applicable city, state, and federal requirements.
Salary/Benefits:
- Hourly Pay Range: $27.88/hr. to $36.06/hr. (Based on qualifications and experience)

Duties and Responsibilities:
Plan Review Duties: Examine residential and commercial construction plans for compliance with IRC, IBC, and municipal codes. Verify compliance with zoning regulations and subdivision requirements. Issue plan review comments, approve permits, and coordinate plan corrections with developers, architects, and engineers. Maintain accurate records of plan reviews and approvals. Provide technical guidance to applicants and internal staff regarding code interpretations.
Inspection Duties: Conduct on-site inspections at various construction stages to verify compliance with approved plans and city codes. Inspect foundations, framing, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and fire safety systems. Issue correction notices, stop-work orders, and occupancy approvals as necessary. Perform stormwater compliance and ADA accessibility inspections as required.
Administrative & Compliance Responsibilities: Maintain digital and physical records of all plan reviews, permits, and inspections. Assist in pre-development meetings to provide developers with permitting guidance. Participate in updates to city codes and ordinances. Testify in court proceedings related to code enforcement if necessary. Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Development Services.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education & Experience: Required High School diploma or GED required. Preferred Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Architecture, Engineering, or a related field. Minimum 3 years of experience in building plan review and/or inspections. Municipal experience preferred.
Certifications (Preferred or Required Within One Year):
- ICC Certified Building Plans Examiner
- ICC Residential or Commercial Inspector Certification
- Texas Plumbing Inspector License (Required)
Skills & Abilities:
- Strong knowledge of IRC, IBC, NEC, IPC, IMC, and IECC codes.
- Ability to read and interpret construction blueprints and technical drawings.
- Proficiency in permit management software and Microsoft Office.
- Strong communication and customer service skills.
- Ability to work independently and make informed technical decisions.
Work Environment: Hybrid role: Office setting for plan reviews & fieldwork for inspections. Exposure to outdoor weather conditions, construction hazards, and uneven terrain. Requires climbing ladders, walking construction sites, and wearing safety gear. Standard work hours: Monday – Friday, 7:30 AM – 4:30 PM, with occasional after-hours inspections. This is not a remote job.
